Amina by Beatrice Brandini

Daniele, 2016 – 2017 di Y.Z. Kami

The exhibition of Y.Z. Kami, works exhibited for the first time in Florence in symbolic places of the city, such as the Museo del Novecento, the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, the Innocenti Museum and in the millenary Abbey of San miniato al Monte.

The exhibition, created with the support of Gogosian, curated by Sergio Risaliti, opens today and will be visible until 24 September 2023.

Two moments of the press conference, Sabrina Breschi (Museum degli Innocenti) Sergio Risaliti (Museum del Novecento) Stefania Rispoli (Museum del Novecento) Alessia Bettini (vice mayor).

Poetic style of Kami is expressed above all through the portraits of women and men caught in the foreground, often with their eyes closed and against backgrounds in which the details are absent or imperceptible. They are ethereal presences that do not seem to be part of our life or everyday life. They are silent, immobile, with the ability to attract the viewer into a mystical and contemplative dimension.

These paintings, created starting from photographs taken of family and friends, are the result of a very slow process, and represent real apparitions, also thanks to this blurred, ethereal painting, which seems the closer we get to observing it, the more it seems to move away.

Kami manages to tell humanity, capturing the human essence; a precocious painter (Teheran 1956), he began to paint when he was only five years old in his mother’s studio, a passion and a habit that, fortunately, never left him. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris, to then migrate to the United States which will count him among its illustrious citizens.

In observing Kami’s works, it is as if we were observing the essence of ourselves, in silence, on the verge of transcendence, we become compassionate, even towards ourselves. The artist accompanies us on this journey, making us understand that freedom, solidarity, indulgence and understanding are essential values for “saving” the world.

Kami’s works are exhibited and collected in numerous important public collections such as those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Salomon R. Guggenheim in New York, the British Museum in London.

“With this project, Florence once again confirms its vocation for the contemporary and its ability to dialogue through the art of the past and the future”. Alessia Bettini.

Y-Z- Kami’s works are more urgent than ever, in a world torn apart by conflicts, the viewer witnesses a sort of moral “process”, he is led to review his priorities and values, in a feeling of universal compassion. There is all the vulnerability of the human being, both through what you see and through what you feel inside you.
